Blow your own with Arturia Brass 2.0

by Paul Dakeyne, in Music Software, No Comments

brass_optmzI’ve always been into the creative layering and usage of brass lines in dance/pop music. Looking back into my record collection at the 80’s wonders Yello (with tracks like ‘The Race’), Herb Alpert’s dalliance ‘in the groove’, and right up to date with a track like ‘Mary Jane’ by Major Lazer, a well formed Brass hook can have the ‘involuntary hip movement’ effect that … continue reading ‘Blow your own with Arturia Brass 2.0’

Arturia Ten Year Suite Synthmania

by Paul Dakeyne, in Music Software, No Comments

Arturia 2600 VNot to be outdone by the N.I. boys, French binary twiddlers Arturia are celebrating a full decade of developing and join this weeks contender list for ’software deal of the century’. Now available is their Ten Year Anniversary Suite, resplendent in a lush gold box with a whacking 8 manuals, 8 DVD roms and one Syncrosoft key. This splits down to 7 legendary synth emulations, the highly prop’d compendium tool, Analog Factory and the scarily realistic ‘Brass‘ virtual instrument.

Since 1999,  Arturia’s core technology TAE (True Analog Emulation) has helped them accurately create and stabilize some of the greatest vintage synth models and musical environment emulations ever known. I own quite a few of these and they certainly add to my personal audio palette of preferred sound sources. Being fortunate enough to … continue reading ‘Arturia Ten Year Suite Synthmania’

Get in the Moog

by Paul Dakeyne, in Synths & Keyboards, No Comments

moog minimoog voyagerWhat’s Phat, Sexy and a real Buzz to use..? Answer on a postcard please with the word ‘MINIMOOG’ emblazoned in capitals. I first had the pleasure of touching and programming a bonafide Minimoog ‘D’ in the 90’s at a West London studio. With it’s 3 controllable VCO’s, noise source and external input, variable waveforms and those incredible Moog filters, I was a kid in an analogue sweetshop making big warm basses, bleepy electronic percussives and searing monophonic lead lines. … continue reading ‘Get in the Moog’

80’s Synths, Drums ‘n Pop Stars

by Paul Dakeyne, in Music Software, No Comments

howard jonesIt’s official, and has been for a long time.. The 80’s are cool again. The decade of synths, mullets and miners strikes is enjoying a resurgence not only with the ‘40 something’ populace, but the kids too are getting it on to 80’s electro-pop. I’ve just recovered from a ‘Wilde’ weekend in Manchester with some of the ‘Here and Now’ tour artists, namely Kim (and brother Ricky) Wilde, Howard Jones (pictured) and Kid Creole (with his ‘Coconuts’).

What really interests me … continue reading ‘80’s Synths, Drums ‘n Pop Stars’

RockNRolla - something old, something new…

by Paul Dakeyne, in New Music / Classic Tunes, No Comments

Managed to sit down, relax, hit the surround system on full, and watch Guy Ritchie’s masterpiece ‘RockNRolla’ the other night.. Apart from the cinematic marvel, great editing and hugely entertaining characters, two tracks again caught my attention. From way back in 1984, when the term ‘Balearic Music’ hadn’t been coined but certainly existed, being a hidden music genre for a multitude of styles and influences coming together to create one off and very unique dance records (ok, some may have been called ‘one hit wonders), comes this gem from ‘Flash in the Pan’ … continue reading ‘RockNRolla - something old, something new…’
