Novation Launchpad vs Akai APC40
by David Bell, in Music Computers & Hardware, No Comments
The Akai APC40 control surface was only released in May 2009, but now just five months later Novation has stormed in with the release of the Novation Launchpad. It’s an exciting time to be an Ableton user, but what do you do when confronted with two specially designed, multi-button, multi-colour hardware Ableton controllers? Well you put them to the test, naturally…
This is the enviable job of DV247 production guru Paul Dakeyne, who will soon be sitting down with the Novation Launch pad to see just how impressive it is, before reporting back to this blog. In his own words: “I’m looking forward to spending a couple of days in front of Ableton Live Suite, Launchpad and the new Nocturn Keyboard. I wanna see how … continue reading ‘Novation Launchpad vs Akai APC40’
Noise in Austria – The Sound of Music?
by Paul Lavigne, in General, No Comments
Last week-end I was invited to play in Arnoldstein, a small village in Austria near the tri-border with Italy and Slovenia. For concerts abroad my new set up is designed to be the most portable, so I went equipped with my Macbook Pro, running Ableton live and Mainstage (part of the Logic Studio 9 bundle) together using Apple IAC, my TC electronic Konnekt 24D, a Kaoss Pad and a MIDI controller. The great thing is that it all fits in my hand luggage and I don’t have to fear for my equipment when luggage handlers do their job. … continue reading ‘Noise in Austria – The Sound of Music?’

DJ Bravetti - What performance boundary?
by Paul Dakeyne, in New Music / Classic Tunes, No Comments
Interested in electronic dance music? Heard of Gustavo Bravetti? If you answer ‘yes’, then ‘no’, then read on and be enlightened. This Uruguay born DJ/Producer/Performer is not exactly ‘new on the scene’, having been making music for 18 years, but maybe with the advent of MySpace, the ever developing world of music technology and our mouse click accessibility into the works and performances of Century 21 artists, his particular star is shining very bright now.
Gustavo is a very talented synth programmer who collaborates with Ableton on numerous ‘creativity upgrade’ videos (and he’s evidently now onboard as a Native Instruments sound designer), has his own YouTube ‘iProduce‘ channel, produces some unique/minimal tech/tribal house, and is … continue reading ‘DJ Bravetti - What performance boundary?’
ReCycle gets new microsite
by Paul Dakeyne, in Music Software, No Comments
It’s a bit of a Propellerheads themed day today, so here’s part two.. That daddy of all beat slicing software has stuck around and competed with many contenders in the ‘warping’/'transient cutting’ guises of Ableton’s Live, Apple’s Loop utility, Phatmatik Pro, Intakt, and Digi’s Transfuser, etc. But the staying power and versatility of ReCycle 2.1’s REX based architecture has held steady. As if to remind us all that this is still possibly the best of the bunch, the pro-active so ‘n so’s over in Sweden have a new ReCycle microsite. … continue reading ‘ReCycle gets new microsite’
